The Convention for everyone!

What a blast we had in the National University of Singapore University Town (NUS UTown in short) as the Tokyo Kid @ SG folks attended the inaugural MinnaCon on 22 June (Saturday) 2013, the convention for everyone or what the organizers term it, “A Little Something For Everyone”.

MinnaCon, probably one of the ACG major conventions to be held inside a Singapore University, was organized by not one, but two major university (and I mean different universities too) clubs: NUS Comics and Animation Society and Nanyang Technological University Visual Arts Society and kindly supported by the Singapore Cosplay Club. The organizers did cater to the different taste that ACG fans will enjoy:

  • Doujin booths for the doujin lovers,

  • Heart and Soul of Cosfest Anisong Audition for all aspiring anisong singers

  • Pokemon TCG National Championship Singapore 2013 for card fans

And not forgetting: Cosers and Cosplay photographers with the School Uniform Cosplay Competition!

Minna Con 2013

Singing their hearts out!

Over 900 people (as according to the organizer’s statistics released on their FB group) braved the haze to the NUS Utown Plaza to be part of this Everyone’s Convention (if you literally translate that from the Japanese words of MinnaCon to English). Venue may be a little inaccessible, but it sure looks like a great place with both beautiful indoor and outdoor settings for cosplay shots. Imagine Marina Barrage without the sea view.

We managed to rush to the Opening Ceremony of the event at 1 pm and witnessed one maid from the Toki Doki Maid and Butler Café performing. The Masters of Ceremony sure entertained us with their MC-ings and surprise performances, so Kudos to them for a job well done (despite this being the first MinnaCon).

Activity-wise, there were indeed much to be involved with. The local scene of cosplay has once again showed the high quality with Cosers coming in elaborated costumes and props. Even the participants in the School Uniform Competition impressed with their performances and preparation (like props). The Anisong audition showed the wide variety of contestants, from the sexy type to the Yankee “bad boy”, with one even took out and threw his shirt to the audience during his performance. What an exciting feat!

So this Convention is for you?

The various Doujin booths showcased their works to the visitors and I must say the choices of doujin the organizers had brought in sure looked to satisfy Doujin fans of various needs. The venue hosting them may be small, but I am sure in future MinnaCons to come, it may be the haven for aspiring Doujin artists to display their wonderful works.

MinnaCon sure satisfied everyone’s taste and I bet with the success of this inaugural event, the organizers will bring in more exciting programme next year and the years to come!

Well done MinnaCon!
